10 Rules for Brilliant Women

By July 30, 2010 3 Comments

Hello!

If you follow me on twitter, you know this past week has been pretty exciting. Even though it made me tremble in my boots to do it, I published my 10 Rules for Brilliant Women at Huffington Post last week.

The 10 Rules struck a chord, big time, with 1100+ women sharing them on facebook and twitter over the past week or so. I did one radio interview about the article this week (link coming soon) and several more coming up. Very exciting!

The 10 Rules come from my experience coaching, working with, and being dear friends with brilliant women over the years. And they come from my own journey learning to speak up. It’s been particularly gratifying to see something that came straight from my heart and my lived experience resonate with so many people.

A little warning: There has been much upset about the racial, age, and body size bias reflected in the pictures that the Huffington Post editors selected to accompany the piece. The HP editorial staff has heard all the feedback and taken it seriously; expect to see changes on the Huff Post living page as a result. Yay to readers for speaking up about this — it’s an excellent example of simple ways of voicing your brilliance to make change.

Now, a word to the dear male readers of this blog. You too are brilliant, and certainly many of these rules are good practices for everyone. I wrote these rules specifically for women because there is something going on our in our culture about brilliant women not fully owning, speaking, acting on their brilliance – and I don’t see quite the same phenomenon with men. I hope you’ll take something from the article, particularly ideas about how to support and affirm the brilliant women in your workplace and your life.

Visit Huff Post and read the piece here!

Love,

Tara

  • Is this list posted anywhere on your blog? I’d love to read it but dislike very much having to go screen to screen like that. Thanks!

    Hi Tara,
I always seem you read your wonderful advice just when I need it the most! I loved this post, and have shared it with some amazing women I know. And now, having hit the wall a bit this week, I’m going to take some time to refuel my tank – thanks for the permission, which I know was mine to give myself anyway, but when the tank’s running on empty sometimes the permission has to come from someone else.
