We need to have a chat. Pull up a chair.
I’ve been hearing from more and more women that there’s a mean voice inside talking to them about Playing Big. Saying, “You are’t ready to play big. You have to get your act together and straighten out all your issues and become perfect first.”
Or…
“The other women in the course are going to be incredible, and intimidating. You won’t fit in and you’ll feel lame.”
Or…
“Who do you think you are to think you are the kind of woman who should be playing big? You don’t even really know what you are talking about.”
To be honest, I totally missed the boat on this.
I’ve been in my little corner of the world working on making this the most awesome course/journey/experience/ that I can. My inner critic is worrying about whether the course will be good enough for all of you. My critic is worrying about how to get the word out about the course without coming across as the most horrible spammy marketer EVER. Like all inner critics, mine preoccupied with it’s own stuff – and so it never occurred to me that some of you might be feeling intimidated about signing up for Playing Big.
Until someone said they were feeling this way. And then someone else did. And then someone else.
And women who were signing up started sending me emails like “Whew! I signed up. My knees are shaking but I signed up!”
So, #1. If you are feeling intimidated or scared about signing up, you aren’t alone.
#2. Your inner critic has good reason to be speaking up. It is true that this course is likely to threaten her control over your actions, to make you question her edicts, to make you see playing big in a new way – a way she can’t control so easily. That part of you that loves perfectionism, the status quo, putting off playing big for another couple years well – all those parts should be shakin’ in their boots – because they know that this course is about to challenge them.
In the course, we are going to talk a lot about how these parts of ourselves get in the way of our Playing Big, our speaking up, our doing it NOW. I teach my favorite tools for managing those parts of ourselves – so that they no longer dictate our behavior.
But for now, I can only ask this:
Please don’t let your inner critic prevent you from having this experience.
If you don’t want to have it right now, no problem.
But if something in you wants to join Playing Big, please don’t let that inner mean lying voice get in your way. Please don’t let the fears get in the way.
Let your aspirations and your desires be in charge instead.
Thanks for reading.
