Making Love to Time

By February 1, 2012 10 Comments

Yesterday, I was listening to a beautiful interview with the late Irish poet John O’Donahue.

He said,

“One of the biggest problems of modern life is that time has become the enemy.”

He spoke about how so many of us struggle with time: we struggle with how much we have, we struggle to fit things in, we complain about the lack of it.

Yes, it’s problematic that the pace and expectations of modern life leave us without time for white space, for reflection, for downtime.

Yes, “lack of time” is an ever-convenient, oft-used excuse for not following one’s passion, not doing one’s art, not tending to their spiritual lives.

But until I heard John O’Donahue say, “One of the biggest problems of modern life is that time has become the enemy,” I hadn’t realized the depth of the problem. When you set yourself up in that oppositional relationship to time, you are cutting yourself off from the very flow of life.

Whatever this magic-carpet-ride of life is, time is the backdrop. Time is the fabric of our lives. Time is the sea in which we swim.

Time is mysterious, ancient as the cosmos, holy as breath. Do you really want to live in a fight with it, or a complaint against it?

Make love to time. Listen to its music. Spend time with it, lovingingly. Hold it with a soft, open hand and allow it to show you its secrets.

Find out how soft it is. If its a fabric, it’s silk. If it’s a music, it’s a sound that rolls and leaps like the wind.

You’ll find out that time is wise, and alive and making a quiet music.

Today, make love to time, and see what you two create.

Love,

Tara

Special Course for Entrepreneurs: Abundant, Happy Launches

As you know, I’m just coming out of the Playing Big registration period. I’m excited and proud that 140 women from around the world are participating in the program.

I’ve been thinking about how much I’ve learned about marketing and product development that allowed me to successfully fill a program with a large group — and wanting to share what I’ve learned with you. I’ve created a short class in which I’ll do just that.

I know that, like me, many of you run small businesses that offer something needed and positive to the world — as coaches, wellness practitioners, artists, consultants. Many of you are walking the exciting — yet frustrating — path of promoting products or services online. (Or you are thinking about doing so soon.)

You are probably excited by the potential of how many people you could reach and the possibility of creating something financially scalable and sustaining. But you are also probably frustrated with launches that landed with a thud — when you announced a product or service online and saw no — or very low — sales. It’s such a disappointing, ouch, icky moment. I’d like you to not have those disappointing, ouch, icky moments anymore.

I’d like to share what I learned with you — the strategies that work and how to build successes even out of the things that aren’t doing well so far. This is marketing — but with special attention to the approaches that bring together integrity, authenticity, and effectiveness. CLICK HERE to learn more.

Tara, love this post! I have felt that battle with time and sometimes waste time worrying/fretting that I don’t have enough time. It’s comical when we step back and see the vicious cycle we create for ourselves.

Today I shall make love with time. Cuddle with it. Invite it for tea. Already my heart rate has dropped just thinking that.

    With love and admiration,
    Paula

Wow, what a concept blaster! Of course, how could time be the enemy when it is the very flowing fabric of our lives, inseparably. When I think of making love to time I immediately feel at home, like there’s nowhere else I need to be. “oh, yes, this is for me” Like this is my time, a gift uniquely for me if I only stop fighting with it! This has really hit at the core of my heart. Thank you for this.

Thinking of time this way brings an ease, a softness.

I keep seeing an open window with a white cotton drape wafting back and forth, green and blue beyond. Gentle, soft, flowing.

    Breathing it all in.

    Thank you, Tara…

  • Ditto on all above comments and on your wonderful post about time! Tara, you are so right (again!! this is a pattern with you and your insights, meaning, being right, ha ha!) … Time doesn’t have to be an enemy, it is really our companion on this journey we are all on! Although I do wish it would slow things down a bit.

I’m going to experience and sink into time as if it’s a luxury silken blanket that caresses and supports me – and smells very good!

Thanks for a wonderful post Tara…I am learning to allow time to be and it is a hard concept to grasp when we are surrounded by so many responsibilities. It has helped me realize that all can not be achieved within 24 hrs and thus I forgive myself for all that could not be done and give myself time to be in touch with my inner voice that says “it’s time to rest physically and spiritually”.

Tara, because of time, I set this e-mail of your post aside until I had Time for it. I’m making it right now. I am a true and firm believer that things come to us when we’re ready, but we might not know we are ready when that happens.
I’ve done alot of soul searching, thinking and a little doing this past year with the help of my ‘officially private’ blog. Alot of the thinking has been subconciously and in my dreams. I am feeling new life in me and the desire to focus and zero in on what it is I truly am passionate about and want to do for the rest of my life. It’s still a struggle at times because there is so much I want to do and alot to learn yet. My biggest problem is having to work my full time job mainly because of the insurance (Hubby retired) 1 1/2 years ago, he is 10 years older than me. We have talked about it and I’m saying it out loud to anyone who will listen that when he goes on Medicare in 1 1/2 years, I’m retiring. So in that Time period I have alot of work to do to try and make some kind of business plan as I want to spend the rest of my life being inspired, making art,and hoping inspiring others.
The one thing I’ve been starting to do is on weekends to take advantage of any opportunity to step out of my box, just do ‘it’, even when I don’t want to because all I want to do is stay home and do my thing (which is all I do and have started spinning wheels because I don’t know where to start, there’s too much). I did it yesterday. I went with a friend to pick-up Maddie, a 6-year old Golden Retrieve she had adopted.I am now a part of that precious dog’s life. The only kind of Time worth spending, Meaningful Time.

I adore you and your wisdom, you must be an old soul helping us young ones to find the right path.
God bless you and so many thanks!
