Gender Bias on Top Chef

By February 5, 2011 3 Comments

Hi everyone!

Just a quick note to say I have a new article up at Huffington Post, about gender dias on the reality television program Top Chef. I’m a fan of the show and have been watching for years, but all the while getting more and more frustrated with the way gender bias operates on the show.

Whether or not you watch the show, I hope you’ll read and comment on the article – the research shared, and the way gender bias comes into play – applies to all other industries as well.
Here it is!

Wow Tara – Great article. I don’t watch the show but I totally get what you are saying and Congrats to you on this article. I really enjoyed it. Gayle

This is beyond “excellent writing.” Thanks, Tara, for providing well-chosen, concrete examples. You did your homework and also applied incisive thinking.

Yes, this (probably)unintentional bias exists across many fields, and it still exists across a range of age-groups. Your post will (hopefully) engender reflection and then action. It’s difficult to measure progress with this behavior…

I don’t watch the show but I do feel bias is apparent in many fields dating back to cave man days. I guess we have to think about how the stereotypes came into being and the biggest question of all … Why? I have my answers to that question but I’d like to know what others think.
    Great article!
